Preschool (or Maternelle) is an integrated and essential first phase of the French educational system. This cycle focuses on general concepts and provides an important foundation for future learning. Preschool children enjoy their time at school, and begin to build relationships with other children and adults in our warm and caring environment. Children’s learning is established through varied and rich experiences. They learn how to listen, to be responsible for their actions, to follow simple rules, and to share and take turns.
During their school day, students are immersed in the French language for the majority of the time. They learn to develop their vocabulary and expression through songs, poems, stories and games. Learning centers and physical activities allow each child to develop fine and gross motor skills.
The school day is highly structured, but also incorporates free and self-directed play. Children learn to express themselves in a manner appropriate to the time and place, to respect others, and to understand the consequences of their behavior. Teachers respect the intelligence and abilities of each child, and in this warm and supportive environment, children are challenged, encouraged to think independently, and fully realize their potential at each developmental level.
The Petits program is available as a 3-morning format (Monday/Wednesday/Friday), 5 mornings or 5 full days. The Moyens program is available 5 mornings or 5 full days. Preschool starts at 8:45am, with drop-off starting at 8:30am.
To be accepted into the petits preschool program, children should be 2.5 and must be fully potty-trained. We are restricted, due to licensing requirements, from accepting children who have not yet mastered this skill.
Kindergarten (Grands)
The kindergarten class (the grands) belongs to both the first and the second cycle, as it is a year of preparation for elementary school. The curriculum focuses on reading, writing and mathematical readiness. Students strengthen their language skills and start to “write” stories. They also strengthen their ability to recognize letters and sounds. Kindergarteners increase self-discipline, attention span and listening skills to prepare for elementary school.
